Product Details
Size 2.5"
The Apache Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara sp.) is a vibrant, aquarium-bred hybrid line of African cichlids. Unlike many African cichlids, the Apache is not a wild species found in nature; rather, it is a man-made strain developed by breeders to highlight dramatic coloration. However, its biological lineage entirely traces back to the predatory Aulonocara (Peacock) genus originating from Lake Malawi
Physical Characteristics & Varieties
  • Size: They typically reach an adult size of 5 to 6 inches (12–15 cm).
  • Coloration: Standard Apache Peacocks typically showcase deep blue bodies with bold red or orange highlights cutting across their sides and shoulders.
  • Color Strains: Specialty breeders like Snake River Cichlids have isolated distinct color variants, including the Yellow Apache (featuring intense yellow shoulders) and the Albino Apache.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: True to their peacock heritage, males carry the brilliant colors, while females remain mostly muted or colorless.
  • Quick Aquarium Care Profile
    Parameter Requirement
    Care Level Easy / Beginner-friendly
Minimum Tank Size 55–75 gallons (larger if mixing with "Hap" cichlids)
    Water Temperature 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F)
Water pH & Hardness High pH (7.8–8.6); moderately hard water
Diet Carnivore/Omnivore. High-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen foods.
    Tank Setup & Behavior
    • Aquascape: Use sand or crushed coral as a substrate. Peacock cichlids love to sift through sand using specialized lateral-line sensors on their heads to hunt for food. Provide minimal rock structures for hiding while leaving plenty of open swimming space.
    • Temperament: They are mildly aggressive. They will display "conspecific aggression," meaning males will fight other males that look similar to them.
    • Ideal Tank Mates: They do best when housed with other Peacock cichlids or Haps (Haplochromis) of similar size and temperament.
    • Fish to Avoid: Do not mix them with highly aggressive Mbuna cichlids, South American cichlids, or small community fish like tetras, which will easily become a meal.
