Otocinclus catfish, affectionately known as "Oto cats" or "Ottos," are peaceful, hard-working nano catfish from South America. Reaching only 1.5 to 2 inches (4–5 cm) in size, they belong to the armored catfish family Loricariidae and are highly celebrated in the aquarium hobby as one of the absolute best natural algae eaters.
Unlike larger, aggressive algae eaters, Otos are gentle, completely safe for shrimp tanks, and do an incredible job scraping away soft green algae and brown diatoms. However, because they are mostly wild-caught, they can be delicate and require a well-established tank to survive.

🌿 Setting Up the Perfect Oto Tank
Otos need specific conditions to truly thrive. They should never be added to a brand-new, sterile aquarium.
- Mature Ecosystem: Only add Otos to a fully cycled, well-established aquarium that already has visible biofilm and algae growth.
- Heavy Vegetation: Live plants provide expansive surface areas for algae and biofilm to grow. Broad-leafed plants like Anubias and Amazon Swords are perfect resting and grazing spots.
- Driftwood & Botanicals: Adding natural driftwood and leaf litter provides a continuous source of decaying organic matter, which generates the biofilm that forms a massive part of their natural diet.
- Pristine Water Quality: They are highly sensitive to sudden shifts in water parameters, ammonia, and nitrates. Utilize slow drip-acclimation when introducing them to your tank.
🥦 What Do They Eat? (They Can't Live on Algae Alone!)
A common mistake is assuming Otos can live entirely off the naturally occurring algae in a tank. A group of Otos can clear out a tank's algae supply in days, leading to starvation.
- Natural Favorites: They love soft green algae and brown diatoms. They will not eat tough, stubborn algae like black beard algae (BBA) or green spot algae.
- Supplemental Prepared Foods: Offer high-quality Sinking Algae Wafers on Aquarium Co-Op or kelp pellets up to twice a week.
- Blanched Vegetables: They love fresh, organic veggies. Lightly boil (blanch) slices of zucchini, cucumber, or Brussels sprouts, let them cool, and weigh them down in the tank. Remove any uneaten pieces after 24 hours so they don't spoil the water.
