The Blue Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara nyassae), also known as the emperor cichlid, is a stunning, vibrantly colored freshwater fish endemic to the rocky and sandy shores of Lake Malawi, Africa. Renowned for their metallic blue coloration and relatively peaceful nature compared to other African cichlids, they are highly popular centerpieces in the aquarium hobby.

Quick Care Overview
  • Tank Size: Minimum 50–55 gallons (approx. 200 liters) to accommodate active swimming and territory boundaries.
  • Water Parameters: Temperature of 76–82°F (24–28°C), with an alkaline pH range of 7.8–8.6 and a dKH of 10–15.
  • Adult Size: Typically reaches 4 to 6 inches (10–15 cm).
  • Lifespan: Roughly 6 to 10 years with optimal care.
  •
  • Behavior & Tank Setup
    • Aggression Level: They are semi-aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding periods. However, they are much more peaceful than Mbuna cichlids.
    • Aquarium Decor: Replicate their African Rift Lake habitat by using a sandy substrate (they love to sift through sand) and plenty of rock formations to create caves and territories.
    • Ideal Mates: Best housed with other Peacock cichlids (Aulonocara), mild-mannered "Haps" (Haplochromis), or peaceful species like Yellow Labs. Avoid overly aggressive or very small fish.
    •
    Sexual Dimorphism & Breeding
    • Appearance: This species exhibits strong sexual dimorphism. Males display vivid metallic blue shades often paired with yellow or dark markings. Females are smaller and duller, maintaining a silvery-gray or drab brown color to blend in with the environment.
    • Breeding Habit: They are maternal mouthbrooders. To successfully breed them, keep a harem ratio of 3 to 4 females per single male to distribute his aggressive courtship attention. The female will carry fertilized eggs in her mouth for about 3 weeks before releasing free-swimming fry.
    •
    • Diet & Nutrition
Blue Peacocks are omnivores. They thrive on a diverse diet consisting of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes as a base. Supplement their diet regularly with frozen or live treats like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and nutrient-dense Spirulina-based foods.
