The Kadango Cichlid, scientifically known as Copadichromis borleyi (or Red Fin Borleyi), is a stunning, open-water "Hap" cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. Known for its dramatic color transformation, a mature male showcases an electric blue head paired with a striking vivid red-orange body, making it a highly prized centerpiece fish for aquarium hobbyists.

🐟 Appearance & Sexual Dimorphism
  • Males: Mature males feature a brilliant, metallic-blue face and a vibrant red or deep orange body. Their colors intensify based on dominance and breeding readiness.
  • Females & Juveniles: Both sport a more subdued silver-grey to brownish coloration with distinctive orange or red fins.
  • Size: Males grow up to 6 to 8 inches (15–20 cm), while females stay slightly smaller.
  • 🏠 Tank Requirements & Water Parameters
    • Minimum Tank Size: 90 gallons (at least 5 feet long) to accommodate their active swimming habits.
    • Aquascaping: Provide large open swimming areas over sand, mixed with rock formations to build caves and territories.
    • Temperature: Keep the water stable between 76°F and 82°F (24°C–28°C).
    • pH Range: High alkalinity is required, ideally 7.8 to 8.5.
    • Hardness: Hard water, roughly 10–20 dGH.
    🍽️ Diet & Feeding Habits
In the wild, Kadango cichlids are planktivores. In captivity, they are not picky but require a high-quality, protein-balanced diet:
    • High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes
    • Meaty treats like frozen krill, mysis shrimp, and daphnia
    • Carotenoid-rich foods to help enhance and preserve their brilliant red pigments
    •
    • 🤝 Temperament & Compatibility
      • Behavior: They are generally semi-aggressive or peaceful compared to other African cichlids, though males will fiercely protect their territory during spawning.
      • Ideal Tank Mates: Best housed with other Malawi Haps and Peacock cichlids of a similar size.
      • Avoid: Highly aggressive Mbuna cichlids or small tank inhabitants like dwarf shrimp.
