Key Care Requirements

Tank Setup & Substrate: In the wild, these fish inhabit sandy coastal areas. You should use coral sand or aragonite as a substrate to naturally buffer and maintain the high pH and hardness levels they require. They love to dig and will occasionally bury themselves if frightened, so smooth sand is critical to prevent injuries.
Aquascaping: Provide rock formations along the back and sides of the aquarium to create hiding spots, but ensure you leave ample open swimming space in the center. Secure all rockwork directly to the bottom of the tank so their digging doesn't cause structural collapses.
Diet & Feeding: They are opportunistic omnivores. Offer a high-quality variety of cichlid flakes, slow-sinking pellets, and frozen foods like Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and krill. They benefit from supplementary greens like spirulina as well.
Social Structure: To manage breeding behavior and mild dominance displays, it is best to keep them in a harem setup consisting of one male to 3–5 females.
Compatible Tankmates: They do well alongside other peaceful or mildly aggressive Lake Malawi "Haps" (such as Aulonocara peacock cichlids) or Synodontis catfish. Avoid housing them with highly aggressive Mbuna cichlids, which can stress them out.
