Discus fish (Symphysodon), often crowned the "King of the Freshwater Aquarium," are celebrated for their striking disc-shaped bodies, brilliant neon colors, and majestic, slow-moving behavior. Native to the slow-moving floodplains and river basins of the Amazon River, these premium cichlids have sparked a massive international cult following complete with dedicated breeders, global competitions, and highly sought-after genetic strains.
Key Characteristics & Anatomy
  • Size & Lifespan: They typically grow to 5–6 inches in diameter, though domestic variants can reach 8–9 inches. With high-quality care, they live between 10 to 15 years.
  • Color Mutations: While wild-caught discus are generally brownish-yellow, selective captive breeding has produced spectacular domestic color strains like Turquoise, Crimson Red, Pigeon Blood, and Golden Yellow.
  • Mood & Stress Indicators: Discus have the unique ability to darken their bodies or display intense vertical stress bars depending on their mood, environment, or health status.
    • Unique Parenting: They practice highly advanced parental care, where both parents secrete a nutrient-rich mucus-like substance from their skin to nurse their newborn fry.
    Aquarium Care Requirements
Keeping discus requires a strong commitment to stability. While modern domestic strains are hardier than their wild ancestors, they still have strict baseline demands.
    Requirement Target Parameters & Guidelines
Tank Size Minimum 55 to 75 gallons to accommodate a healthy group.
School Size They are social schooling fish; keep them in groups of at least 5 to 6 to prevent bullying and stress.
Temperature Keep it remarkably warm: 85°F to 86°F (29°C–30°C).
Water Chemistry Maintain a stable pH between 6.0 and 7.0 (though captive-bred types can adapt up to 7.8) with soft water.
Filtration A robust system (like a high-quality canister filter) is mandatory to keep ammonia and nitrites at zero.
Water Changes Perform weekly water changes of 30% to 50% (or smaller changes multiple times a week) to clear nitrates.
    Diet & Nutrition
Discus are omnivores that require a high-protein, varied diet to optimize their color and growth.
    • Staple Foods: High-quality protein pellets, flakes, and specialized granules.
    • Live & Frozen Treats: Bloodworms, brine shrimp, and freeze-dried or frozen beef heart mixes.
    • Feeding Frequency: Feed young fish 2 to 3 times daily in small amounts. Promptly remove any uneaten food after 5 minutes to avoid toxic ammonia spikes.
    Selecting Tank Mates
Because discus live in unusually warm water and are notoriously slow feeders, choosing tank mates is a delicate balance. Quick, aggressive fish will easily outcompete them for food.
    • Best Matches: A discus-only tank is highly recommended for beginners. If adding companions, choose high-temperature-tolerant, peaceful species like Cardinal Tetras, Sterbai Corydoras, or Bristlenose Plecos.
    • Species to Avoid: Fast-swimming or hyperactive fish like barbs, clown loaches, and even certain fast-moving angelfish strains.
