An Albino Algae Eater (most commonly referring to the Albino Chinese Algae Eater or Golden Algae Eater, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri) is a very popular but frequently misunderstood freshwater aquarium fish. While they are highly effective at cleaning up soft green algae and diatoms when they are young, they undergo drastic changes in size, diet, and temperament as they mature.
⚠️ The Mature Reality of the Albino Chinese Algae Eater

Before buying one of these golden, red-eyed juvenile fish, it is vital to know how they change as they grow:
  • Deceptive Size: They are usually sold at a tiny 1 to 2 inches long, but they easily grow to 6 to 11 inches (15–28 cm) as adults.
  • Aggressive Behavior: As they mature, they become highly territorial and semi-aggressive. They often stop eating algae altogether and demand a protein-based diet.
    • Slime Coat Sucking: Adult Chinese Algae Eaters are notorious for latching onto the sides of large, flat-bodied tankmates (like Angelfish, Discus, or Goldfish) to suck off their protective slime coat, which leaves painful wounds and causes extreme stress.
    Care & Tank Requirements
If you choose to keep an Albino Algae Eater, they require specific conditions to minimize stress and curtail territorial outbursts:
Tank Setup Highly oxygenated water with strong currents, plenty of driftwood, smooth river stones to attach to, and secure hiding caves.
    Parameter Requirement
Minimum Tank Size 55 gallons (208+ liters) for an adult (do not keep them long-term in nano or 10–20 gallon setups).
    Water Temperature 74°F to 80°F (23°C to 27°C).
    pH Range 6.0 to 8.0.
Diet (Juvenile) Soft green algae, diatoms, biofilm, and sinking algae wafers.
Diet (Adult) Sinking pellets, live/frozen high-protein treats (bloodworms, brine shrimp) to prevent them from hunting tankmates.
