Selaginella erythropus, commonly known as Ruby Red Club Moss or Red Spikemoss, is a striking, ancient tropical plant prized for its intense two-toned foliage. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, it features frilly, fern-like deep green leaves on top with a brilliant ruby-red or burgundy underside.

Key Visual Characteristics

  • Two-Toned Contrast: The red coloration is typically found on the stems and the undersides of the leaves, which reflects light in low-intensity environments to optimize photosynthesis.
  • Growth Habit: It behaves as a low-growing, spreading groundcover that reaches roughly 6 inches in height but can trail outwards significantly over time.
  • Prehistoric Roots: Despite its common name, it is a spikemoss (a lycophyte) rather than a true moss or fern, making it part of an ancient lineage of vascular plants.
Essential Care Guide

Because of its tropical origin, this plant has specific environmental requirements to keep its vibrant red colors intact:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light to partial shade. Avoid direct afternoon sunlight, which easily burns the delicate, lacy foliage.
  • Humidity: Extremely high humidity (70%+ is ideal). Because it dries out quickly, it thrives exceptionally well inside enclosed vivariums, terrariums, and paludariums.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. It does not tolerate drying out completely, which quickly leads to crisping and browning.
  • Substrate: A well-draining, moisture-retaining soil mix (such as a blend of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark).
