Alternanthera bettzickiana, commonly known as the calico-plant or Buntes Sumpf-Papageienblatt, is a vibrant herbaceous perennial native to South America. Belonging to the amaranth family (Amaranthaceae), it is widely cultivated globally for its striking, multicolored foliage which can display shades of green, yellow, red, and pink.  

• Ornamental Edging & Ground Cover: Because it grows relatively low (typically 20–80 cm in terrestrial settings) and dense, it is highly valued as a tropical border plant or ground cover to control soil erosion.   
• Terrariums & Paludariums: It thrives in highly humid environments with evenly moist soil, making it excellent for vivariums and terrarium setups.  
• The Aquarium Misconception: While frequently sold in the aquarium trade as an "aquatic stem plant" due to its gorgeous submersed look, it is actually a semi-aquatic/terrestrial plant. If submerged completely underwater long-term, it grows very slowly, loses its color variation, and becomes incredibly demanding—requiring high levels of CO₂, intense lighting, and strict fertilization to survive the conversion process.

  Care Requirements
  • Temperature: Optimally prefers warm ranges between 20°C and 28°C.
  • Soil & Moisture: Requires a constantly moist, well-draining soil or substrate along with high ambient air humidity.
  • Maintenance: Regular trimming is necessary to keep the plant in its signature compact, bushy form. When planting dense carpets, provide adequate spacing to preserve air circulation and ward off gray mold (Botrytis).
