Pogostemon helferi Tissue Culture (T/C) Cups—often known in the hobby by its Thai name, "Downoi" (meaning "Little Star")—are highly popular foreground aquarium plants. Purchased as a sterile tissue culture cup, this plant provides a pest-, snail-, and algae-free head start for aquascapes. It features distinct, crinkled, wavy-edged leaves arranged in a compact rosette that resembles a small green star or sea anemone.
Quick Overview
Care Level: Medium
Growth Rate: Medium
Placement: Foreground to lower Midground
Key Benefit: T/C cups yield multiple clean, independent plantlets that easily spread via side shoots to form a dense carpet.
Planting Instructions
Uncap & Remove: Peel off the lid and carefully pull the mass of plantlets out of the cup.
Wash the Media: Submerge the root base in a bowl of room-temperature water. Gently wash away all the clear agar gel or liquid nutrient media.
Divide: Use your fingers or sharp aquascaping scissors to separate the cluster into several individual portions.
Plant: Using fine aquascaping tweezers, grip the roots of each individual portion and push them deeply into your substrate. Space them 1–2 inches apart to allow room for runners to spread.
