The Plecostomus (commonly known as the pleco or suckermouth catfish) is a highly popular tropical freshwater fish belonging to the armored catfish family (Loricariidae). Famous for its specialized, underslung vacuum-like mouth, it is widely kept in the aquarium hobby to clean algae from tanks.  

• Natural Armor: Instead of traditional scales, plecos are protected by tough, bony plates called scutes. They also possess defensive spines that they can raise when threatened 
• Nocturnal Nature: These fish are primarily active at night. During the daytime, they prefer to hide in dark crevices, caves, or under driftwood. 
• Surprising Size: While often sold as cute 2-to-3-inch babies, the Common Pleco (Hypostomus plecostomus) can grow into a massive 18 to 24 inches (50 cm) beast. Because they grow so large and produce a heavy waste load, they ultimately require massive aquariums (often 75 to 150+ gallons) or indoor ponds.  
• Dietary & Tank Setup Tips
  • Don't Rely Solely on Algae: Tank algae is rarely enough to sustain them. Supplement their diet daily with commercial sinking algae wafers and high-quality bottom-feeder pellets. 
  • Fresh Veggies: Treat them once or twice a week to raw, anchored vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, or sweet potato.  
  • Provide Wood: Many species require real driftwood in the tank. Rasping on the wood provides them with essential cellulose and lignin necessary for healthy digestion.
