Mono fish, belonging to the family Monodactylidae, are dynamic, diamond-shaped fish renowned for their striking silver bodies, vertical black stripes, and vibrant yellow-tinted fins. Often called moonfishes, silver moonies, or fingerfishes, these highly active schooling fish are native to the coastal estuaries, mangroves, and river mouths of Africa, Asia, and Australia.  

• Juveniles: Often sold in the aquarium trade as freshwater or low-salinity brackish fish.
• Adults: As they mature and grow up to 8 to 10 inches long, they require a gradual transition into high-salinity brackish water or full marine environments to stay healthy and preserve their best coloration.  

• Tank Size: Because they are fast, energetic swimmers that must be kept in schools (ideally in odd numbers like 3, 5, or 7), they require massive tanks. A minimum aquarium size of 90 to 125 gallons is highly recommended for long-term health.  
• • Diet: Monos are enthusiastic omnivores. They love meaty foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms, but they must have a diet rich in vegetable matter (such as dried seaweed/Nori, spirulina, or blanched kale) to prevent nutritional deficiencies. They will gladly snack on soft-leaved live plants in the tank.  
  • Temperament: They are generally peaceful but semi-aggressive and highly competitive during feeding times. They can easily stress out smaller, slower tank mates. Great companions include other hardy brackish species like Scats or large, robust cichlids.  ]
