Flowerhorn or Cobalt Blue Flowerhorn, is a striking, selectively bred hybrid cichlid celebrated for its brilliant, metallic blue coloration. Unlike traditional Flowerhorns that feature red tones and distinct dark "flower" markings along their flanks, the Cobalt variant is prized for its uniform, shimmering blue sheen that covers its entire body and prominent nuchal hump (kok).
Key Characteristics & Care
Appearance: They possess a solid, high-shine metallic blue or powder-blue color. Like all male Flowerhorns, they develop a large nuchal hump (kok) on their head as they mature.
Temperament: They are highly territorial and aggressive. It is best to house them completely alone in a single-specimen tank.
Tank Setup: They require a large environment, with a minimum tank size of 75 to 90 gallons for a single adult. Keep decorations minimal and heavy, as they love to aggressively rearrange their substrate.
Intelligence: They are exceptionally interactive "wet pets" that quickly learn to recognize their owners, follow fingers through the glass, and even respond to feeding routines.
Dietary Requirements
To maintain their intense metallic luster and support healthy head growth, a high-protein diet is essential:
Premium Pellets: Look for specialized cichlid formulas like Okiko Platinum or Humpy Head.
Proteins & Treats: Supplement their diet with frozen krill, bloodworms, or occasional mealworms.
