How to Plant the Bulb

Improper planting is the number one reason water lily bulbs rot. Follow these steps to ensure rapid sprouting:

- Identify the top: Look for the slightly more pointed end, or look closely for any tiny green shoots starting to emerge. [1]
- Partial burial: Gently press the bulb into your substrate so that the bottom two-thirds is buried and the top one-third remains sticking out into the open water.
- Do not fully bury: Fully burying the bulb blocks oxygen and causes it to rot and die.
- The "Unsure" Method: If you cannot tell which side is the top, simply rest the bulb flat on top of the substrate. Once it sprouts leaves in a few days, you can easily identify the top and plant it correctly.
Growth & Maintenance Tips
- Substrate & Fertilization: Nymphaea rubra is a heavy root feeder. It requires a nutrient-rich substrate or the addition of root tabs (especially those containing iron) to achieve its deepest red colors.
- Controlling the Size: Left alone, the plant will quickly send long runners to the surface to form floating lily pads. If you want to keep the plant compact and bushy at the bottom of your aquarium, simply prune away the floating surface leaves as soon as they appear. This forces the energy back down into the submerged foliage.
- Achieving Blooms: If you want the plant to produce its signature red/pink flowers, you must allow the floating leaves to reach and remain on the water's surface.
- Fish Benefits: The wide, shaded leaves are highly favored by fish like Bettas and small community species, providing excellent cover and natural nesting structures.
