Freshwater crayfish

Freshwater crayfish make incredibly engaging, active, and hardy aquarium pets, often described as the "cranky old characters" of the fish tank. However, because they are destructive diggers, aggressive scavengers, and notorious escape artists, they require a very specific tank setup compared to standard community fish.

Tank Requirements & Setup

Prioritize Floor Space: Crayfish spend almost all of their time walking and exploring the bottom. A wide or long tank is much more valuable than a tall one.
Tank Size: Provide a minimum of 10 to 20 gallons for a single adult crayfish. If you want to keep more than one, you will need a massive tank (50+ gallons) with clear visual barriers, or they will fight to the death.
Hiding Spots (Critical): You must provide multiple caves, PVC pipes, or hollow driftwood pieces. Crayfish are highly territorial and absolutely must have a safe place to hide when they molt (shed their shell), as they are completely soft and vulnerable to being killed during this time.
Substrate: Use natural sand or fine gravel. Crayfish love to burrow, rearrange, and dig into the ground.
- A Tight-Fitting Lid: Crayfish are legendary escape artists. They will easily climb up airline tubing, filter intake pipes, and power cords to push their way out of the tank. Ensure every single gap is tightly covered.
Water Parameters & Equipment
- Filter: Crayfish are messy eaters and produce a heavy bioload. A strong hang-on-back or sponge filter is necessary to prevent toxic ammonia buildup.
- Water Chemistry: They are highly adaptable but prefer a pH between 6.5 and 8.0 and a temperature range of 16°C to 27°C (60°F - 80°F). Harder water is preferred because they need calcium to rebuild their shells after molting.
- Dechlorinator: Always use a Water Conditioner during water changes. Warning: Ensure any water treatments, fertilizers, or medications are completely copper-free, as copper is highly toxic to invertebrates like crayfish.
Diet & Feeding

Crayfish are true omnivorous scavengers and will eat practically anything that drops to the bottom of the tank.
- Staple Diet: High-quality sinking shrimp pellets, invertebrate sticks, or algae wafers.
- Fresh Foods: Blanched vegetables such as zucchini, carrots, peas, and spinach.
- Proteins: Occasional frozen treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
