Female betta fish

Female betta fish (Betta splendens) are increasingly popular in the aquarium hobby due to their unique behaviors, lower aggression compared to males, and modern selective breeding that yields vibrant colors. While traditionally considered less flashy than males, high-quality females now rival their male counterparts in hues and patterns.

Male vs. Female Bettas

While sexing young bettas can be challenging, mature female bettas display distinct physiological traits:

The Ovipositor (Egg Spot): The most reliable trait is a tiny white dot located on their underside, between the pelvic and anal fins, used for depositing eggs. Males lack this.
Fin and Body Shape: Females generally have shorter fins and broader, shorter, rounder bodies—especially near the belly—compared to the long, flowing fins and streamlined bodies of males.
The Gill "Beard": When a betta flares, a membrane under the gill plates emerges. A female's beard is much smaller and barely visible compared to a male’s large, obvious beard.

Betta Sorority Tanks

Unlike males, which will fight to the death, female bettas can sometimes be housed together in a group called a sorority. However, this requires careful planning, as females still establish a strict pecking order:

Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is required.
Group Numbers: Keep at least 4 to 6 females together. Groups of only 2 or 3 will concentrate aggression onto a single weaker fish.
Aquascape: The tank must be heavily planted with plenty of driftwood or decorations to break lines of sight and give submissive fish places to hide.

Care Requirements

Female bettas require the same high-standard care parameters as males to thrive for their 3–5 year lifespan:
